These firsts readings were a great introduction for me into the history of film. Reading the introduction to the book I thought it was interesting to know how influential the cinema scene was in Europe and how fast it traveled the world. The United States really took off with the idea of cinema. Gorky's thoughts on the cinema were interesting to read, his thoughts about how it seemed shadowy and ghost-like because of the lack of color and sound, I thought was ahead of his time. Interesting to think something so new could be critiqued with such futurism.
I also wondered what the development of cinema was like during that time where the Lumiere brothers left the movie scene. What companies continued to film silent films. I thought it was interesting to seem how fast film evolved from 1895-1920.
I also think it is amazing how quickly the technology of cinema traveled around the globe. Its also amazing how quickly technology developed from the birth of cinema to full fledged classic narrative films in the 1920s. French film dominated world cinema until about the early 1900s when Thomas Edison's inventions helped to create the beginnings of cinema industry in the US. We'll read more about that in the upcoming weeks.
